Ágnes Kovács has received yet another American recognition: she has been elected to the Arizona State University immortals. The Olympic, world and European champion swimmer was a member of the university's swimming team between 2001 and 2005.
Ágnes Kovács, who was inducted into the International Aquatics Hall of Fame last year, earned an American degree in marketing and communications in 2005 and, as a graduating student, received the university's highest honor in recognition of her outstanding academic and athletic achievements over the past four years. As a member of the university swimming team, she swam several university and NCAA records, and also won an American championship title, and she currently holds the university record in the 200-yard breaststroke.
After returning home from the United States, Ágnes Kovács earned her second degree at the Corvinus University of Budapest, majoring in economics and sociology, and is currently pursuing her doctoral studies at the University of Physical Education, where she also teaches.
"I was very happy to hear that this year I would also be among the immortals of Arizona State University," Ágnes Kovács told MTI. "I lived in America for four years, went to university, and was a member of the university swimming team. In addition to elite sports, studying has always been of utmost importance to me, which is why I tried to excel in both areas. This award is a very pleasant and honorable response to the fact that the path that I have been following since I was a little girl "I set a goal for myself, and I have achieved it, and it is worthy of recognition by others."
The induction ceremony will take place on October 9 in Phoenix. The newly elected Hall of Fame members will be publicly greeted the following evening, during halftime of the ASU-Colorado American football game, at the 64,000-seat Arizona State University stadium.
Starting this September, the most successful swimmer of all time, American Michael Phelps, will also be preparing for the Rio Olympics with the Arizona State University swimming team, under the guidance of coach Bob Bowman. The university swimming team also includes world championship silver medalist long-distance swimmer Anna Olasz.
